Jirani AI Privacy Policy
Effective 6 November 2026 · Jirani AI by Dali Data Africa, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Jirani AI helps people understand what is happening around them: community reports, local and national news, communities and an AI assistant. This policy explains what information the Jirani AI app and website collect, why, who can see it, and the choices you have. Kiswahili: unaweza kuomba nakala ya sera hii kwa Kiswahili kupitia [email protected].
1. Information we collect
| Information | What and why |
|---|---|
| Account | Your name, email address or phone number, a password (stored only in scrambled, one-way form), language, country and profile photo. Used to sign you in, verify your account and contact you about it. |
| Location | Your device location while you use the app, only with your permission, to show nearby reports, news for your country and communities. The location you browse is rounded to about 100 metres. Recent browsing locations stay on your device for up to 7 days. If you are signed in, we also keep a coarse record of the area you are in (about 1 km, one entry per day, kept 14 days and deleted with your account) so Jirani AI can open a neighbourhood group where none exists. It is never shown to anyone, and the group's centre is never your exact position. We do not track your location in the background. |
| Reports | What you report: text, category, place, time and photos. Public reports show a location rounded to about 100 metres. If you send a report to a sector (for example a water or power utility), the exact point you choose is also kept so the sector can find and fix the problem. |
| Photos | Photos you take or choose for reports, communities or your profile. We re-encode every photo, which removes camera data such as GPS, and add a Jirani AI mark with the place name you chose. |
| One-to-one chats and availability | Messages and photos you send to one person are stored on our servers, and only the two of you can see them in the app. They are encrypted on their way to and from our servers, but are not end-to-end encrypted. Availability is off until you turn it on. If you choose Members, people in your groups can see your name and start a chat. If you choose Public, people within the distance set can also see your name and about how far away you are. Your position is then stored rounded to about 250 metres, is never shown, and is removed when you turn Public off. You can block or report a person, and deleting your account removes this data. |
| Communities | Messages and announcements you share, and the communities and places you follow. If a group's policy requires it, your accurate location is saved with each message you send there. Other members see how far away you were when you sent it, such as 18 m, but not your position. Someone comparing distances from several places could work out roughly where you were. It is deleted with your account. |
| Preferences | The categories you switch on or off. When one is off, updates from it do not reach your phone. |
| Saved on your phone | Your account details, availability, preferences, groups and recent chats are saved on your phone so the app works offline. Signing out removes them. |
| AI assistant and summaries | Questions you ask the assistant and its answers, with the published reports it used. To write the area summary on the Explore and Guide pages, recent published news, community reports and group announcements near the place you view are sent to our AI provider; your name, email and phone number are not sent. |
| Travel (Safari) | When you plan a trip, your start and destination are used to get the route, travel time with traffic, the weather along the way and services on the route (fuel, health, ATM, food, lodging). While a trip runs with the Travel screen open, your position is used on the phone; it is not sent to us unless you save or share the trip. |
| Saved trips | Only when you tap Save trip: the planned route and the path you travelled (coordinates and times), the trip name and the start and destination names are stored on your phone and in your account, so you can open them later. You can delete a saved trip at any time; saved trips are included in your data download and deleted with your account. |
| Trip sharing | Only when you tap Share trip: your latest position, destination name and expected arrival time are shown on a web page to anyone who has the link you share. Sharing stops when you arrive or end the trip; the link stops working one hour after the trip ends and at most 12 hours after you start sharing. |
| Rewards | Your Jirani token history. If payouts are offered, the verified phone number a payout is sent to. |
| Device and technical data | Notification token (if you allow notifications), app version, and server logs such as IP address and request times, used for security and to fix problems. |
2. How we use information
- To provide the app: show reports, news, maps, communities, the assistant and rewards.
- To keep Jirani AI trustworthy: review reports, detect abuse, verify reports and prevent fraud in rewards.
- To send you account messages, codes and notifications you asked for.
- To improve and secure the service.
We do not sell your personal information and we do not show advertising.
3. Who can see your information
- Other users see public reports with your display name, the rounded location, photos and comments, and what you post in communities you share with them.
- Sectors you choose when reporting (and their authorized staff) see that report, including its exact point and photos. Private reports are seen only by you, Jirani AI staff and the chosen sector.
- Jirani AI administrators and moderators see what is needed to review content and support you.
- Service providers who process data for us: Google Maps (addresses, places, routes and travel times), Groq (AI answers and area summaries), Open-Meteo (weather for a place or route; it receives only coordinates), Beem Africa (SMS codes), our email provider, and Google Firebase / Expo (notifications). They may only use it to provide their service to us.
- Authorities, when the law requires it.
Your phone number and email are never shown to other users or to sectors.
4. How long we keep information
We keep your account information while your account is active. Expired sign-in sessions and codes are deleted automatically. Encrypted backups are kept for 3 days. When you delete your account, your profile, sign-in details and photos are removed and your reports and messages are taken out of view; limited records needed for security, legal obligations and to prevent abuse are kept.
5. Your choices and rights
- Change or remove location, camera and notification permissions in your phone settings at any time.
- Edit your profile, choose public or private for each report, and delete your reports.
- Download a copy of your data: Settings → Account data.
- Delete your account in the app (Settings → Account data → Delete account) or as described on this page.
- Contact us to access, correct or delete your information: [email protected].
6. Security
We use encrypted connections, scrambled passwords, encrypted backups and access controls. No system is perfectly secure; tell us at once if you think your account was misused.
7. Children
Jirani AI is intended for people aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we will delete it.
8. Changes
We will post changes on this page and, for important changes, tell you in the app.
